With the second Test of the highly-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series underway at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide, the umpiring standards have once again come under the radar after Mitchell Marsh survived a close call on Day 2. Earlier in the opening Test of the BGT, KL Rahul found himself on the wrong side of the call after he was controversially given out, it was followed by the umpire’s decision in second Test, coming out in favour of Marsh.

In the ongoing Test in Adelaide, Team India was once again on the receiving end of a wrong call despite replays showing that Marsh was a plumb. In the opening session of the second Test, Ashwin trapped Marsh LBW, but the on-field umpire gave him not out. Seeing this, Team India took a referral and went upstairs to the third umpire, who later refused to overturn the decision and confirmed that there wasn’t a conclusive evidence.
Although the replays showed the ball hitting the pad first, going up to hit the stumps, the decision went on umpire’s call as India were denied a definite wicket. Seeing this, fans took to social media, especially X (formerly known as Twitter) to hit out at the third umpire. Several fans shared memes from Chris Rock and Will Smith’s slap incident from an award ceremony, a several others claimed that the umpire is blind to see a clear call.

However, minutes later after the Tea break on Day 2, Ashwin got the prized wicket of Mitchell Marsh. Just in the fifth over after Tea, Ashwin and Pant went for a belated appeal, forcing umpire Richard Illingworth to raise his finger and Marsh heading his way back to the pavilion, scoring just nine runs off 26 deliveries.
