Former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Hafeez and former England skipper Michael Vaughan were involved in a war of words on X, formerly Twitter, during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 game between England and the Netherlands. The latest exchange of opinions revolved around Hafeez's comparison between Virat Kohli's century against South Africa and Ben Stokes' match-winning knock against the Dutch.

Stokes scored a stunning 108 in 84 balls with six fours and six sixes as England posted 339. Reacting to this performance, Hafeez tweeted how Stokes proved the difference between Selfish vs Selfless, a nod to his comment on Kohli's ton against the Proteas. But expressing his disagreement with Hafeez, Vaughan tweeted that both innings were great, but Kohli's century was against a better bowling attack and on a tricky pitch.
Hafeez's tweet said, "Saviour of the ship @benstokes38 Good 100 under pressure anchoring the innings where required with aggressive intent to get Maximum runs for the team to win at the end. Sheer example to differentiate Selfish vs Selfless approach @MichaelVaughan #ENGvNED." Responding to this, Vaughan posted, " Great innings from Stokesy @MHafeez22 .. As was Virats on a difficult pitch in Kolkata against a better attack.."

Coming back to the match, England registered a massive 160-run win over the Netherlands which was also their second victory of the World Cup. Stokes was named the Player of the Match award and while talking about this effort shared that he was more happy with the win.
Stokes said, "More pleased with the victory (than scoring a century), it has been a tough World Cup for us. It was a nice wicket to bat on, had some tennis-ball bounce. We (Woakes and himself) built a good partnership, whenever there was pressure building I had a look at the scoreboard and reminded myself there was a lot of time remaining (in the innings)."
"Tried to take it deep and cash in later. He (Woakes) is a genuine all-rounder for us, he has been a great cricketer for England over the last 2-3 years and today he proved it."
