It was an eventful day for the Indian contingent in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022. The games like Table-Tennis, Cricket and Badminton assured medals in the next two days, while Wrestlers again packed a solid punch to further propel India’s medal tally.

The Badminton superstars Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth were impressive with their performances to reach the semi-finals of men’s singles in the showpiece event. In particular, Sen was dismissive of his opponent to register a smashing victory.

The world number 10 beat Mauritius’ Julien Georges Paul 21-12, 21-11 in straight contests to register a victory and enter the next stage with strong confidence under his belt. Sen will face world number 87, Jia Heng Jason of Singapore, in the penultimate stage on 7 August (Sunday).

On the other hand, 2018 CWG Silver medalist Srikanth won 21-19, 21-17 against Toby Penty of England. However, the former World number one will look to improve his performance in the semi-finals on Sunday. In the mixed event, Srikanth had lost 21-19, 6-21 and 21-16 to NG Tze Yong, which had denied the Indian contingent a gold medal.

In another round of events in Badminton, PV Sindhu also sealed the singles semi-finals spot by beating Wei Goh of Malaysia 19-21, 21-14, 21-18. The women’s doubles event witnessed Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand defeating Tahlia Richardson/Katherine Wynter of Jamaica 21-8, 21-6 to reach the semi-finals.

So far India has secured 35 medals, comprising 12 golds, 11 silvers and 12 bronze, at the CWG 2022. It will be interesting to see if the Indian contingent can surpass the 2018 edition tally of 66 medals.
