The two top-placed sides in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024, Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians squared off against each other in the first match of the season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. On Tuesday, Meg Lanning's Capitals defeated the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, by 29 runs to cement their top spot in the WPL 2024 standings.
Jemimah Rodrigues was the star of the night for the Delhi Capitals as she smashed an unbeaten 69-off-33 with eight fours and three sixes while skipper Meg Lanning smashed six fours and two sixes during her 53 (38) runs knock. On the other hand, Jess Jonassen led the bowling attack for the Capitals to pick three crucial wickets and secure a win.
After winning the toss, Harmanpreet Kaur invited the Capitals to bat first, who went on to register a huge 193-run target. DC openers Lanning and Shafali Verma (28) gave a brisk start to their side followed by Jemimah Rodrigues' onslaught. For the Indians, Pooja Vastrakar was the most economical bowler as she picked up a wicket by giving just 20 runs in her four overs followed by Saika Ishaque's efficient bowling figure of 1/29 in four overs.
During the chase, the Delhi Capitals bowling attack led by Jess Jonassen ran riot against the Mumbai Indians as they reduced the defending champions to five wickets down in nine overs at a score of 68 runs. Amanjot Kaur played a lone warrior's innings with her 27-ball-42 run performance.
For the Capitals, Jess Jonassen was the most successful bowler with three wickets under her belt followed by Marizanne Kapp, who picked up two wickets. The Capitals began the Delhi leg on a winning note as they restricted MI-W to 163 runs at a loss of eight wickets to win the game by 29 runs.
