Argentina great Lionel Messi opened up on his possibilities of playing at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The football legend who led the side to a memorable victory in the 2022 edition of the tournament, was believed to have hung up his boots after the victory. However, Messi hasn’t ruled his chances of playing at the 2026 edition of the biggest football event. The Messi-led side defeated France in Doha to lift the silverware in the previous edition.

It was believed to be Messi’s last appearance at the FIFA World Cup, though he had hinted at continuing to represent Argentina at international level. Recently, ahead of the Copa America 2024, the Inter Miami great dropped hints at featuring in the 2026 edition of the World Cup, set to take place in North America. He said that his decision will depend on how he feels at that time.

Depends on how I feel: Messi on playing 2026 World Cup

The 36-year-old said, “It depends on how I feel, how I am physically and being realistic with myself. And to know if I am up to the task of being able to compete and help the colleagues next to me. There’s a while left and I don’t know how I’m going to be at that moment.”

He added, “Age is also a reality that is there, although it is a number, the games that I am going to play, are not the same as the ones I played when I was in Europe in competition, which were every three days, or in the Champions League or in the League where I was, both in France and in Spain. But it depends on how I feel and how I feel when I’m next to my teammates and see if I’m still up to the task or not.”
