Argentina football legend Diego Maradona, who breathed his last in November 2020, has hit the headlines again following his medical team being set to face charges of negligence which led to the star footballer's death. Over 250 witnesses which also includes Maradona’s family members and doctors will testify under oath during the trial. The trial will start in San Isidro on March 11, 2025, and a three-judge court will be conducting the case. Maradona was undergoing several health issues for years but the prosecution has accused the medical team of negligence which resulted in his death.

Maradona, who played an instrumental role in Argentina’s 1986 World Cup victory, succumbed to cardiac arrest related to pulmonary edema on November 25, 2020. He was undergoing treatment in his residence in Tigre, Buenos Aires. Earlier, he also got a blood clot removed from his brain through a surgery. Maradona’s medical team included neurologist and brain surgeon Dr Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and some other prominent doctors and nurses. If the prosecution succeeds in corroborating the charges against them, they might face the imprisonment of upto 25 years.

Doctor Luque faced heat following Maradona’s speedy surgery

Doctor Luque performed Maradona’s surgery successfully on November 3, 2020. He removed the blood clot from the legend’s brain and also discharged him which grabbed the attention of experts who raised questions on the speed of operation conducted. Experts also claimed Maradona should’ve stayed at hospital for a longer period for complete recovery. 

Dr Cosachov, who is one of the accused, was responsible for prescribing medications to Maradona. Besides Luque and Cosachov, Dr Nancy Forlini, Dr Carlos Diaz, Dr Mariano Perroni are some names who will go under the trial which will be held in the upcoming months.
