Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem has pulled out of the upcoming US Open due to a wrist injury. The defending champion shared the news through a letter that he posted on his official social media account. He had suffered an injury in his right wrist during his match against Adrian Mannarino at the Mallorca Championships June 22.
Thiem in his letter said that the injury has re-aggravated and he has been advised by the doctors to take more time. “I want to update you on my injury and let you know that unfortunately, I have had to withdraw from the US Open and will miss the rest of the 2021 season. I am really disappointed not to be able to defend the title in New York but I haven't recovered from the wrist injury I suffered back in June at the Mallorca open,” he wrote in the letter.
“My recovery was going really well, but then last week I hit a ball during training and started to feel some pain again. I went straight to see the doctors. After some tests, they said that my wrist needs more time to recover. So, we have all agreed on being conservative and to give my wrist some time to recover,” he added.
Thiem made remarkable comeback to win his first Grand Slam title
The 27-year-old Austrian clinched his maiden Grand Slam title when he stunned Alexander Zverev in the US Open final in 2020. Thiem made a remarkable comeback after losing the first two sets and went on to win the game. The world No. 6 has also finished second twice at the Nitto ATP Finals. He also made it to the quarterfinals of the delayed 2020 French Open and final of the season-ending Masters in London.
Last week, former champion Roger Federer also pulled out of the US Open. The 40-year old, who has won five US Open titles to his name, said he needed further knee surgery and admitted he would be out for many months.
