The fifth Test between India and England started on a fiery note for the hosts as their bowlers are turned up the heat at The Oval as they have clinched six wickets at the end of Day 1. Karun Nair has stood tall for India bringing up his half century for India at the end of Day 1. Just days before the fifth Test, the Indian Head Coach Gautam Gambhir was not allowed to inspect the pitch by the English pitch curator Lee Fortis, leading to a heated exchange between the two.
Fondly called as ‘Dada’, Sourav Ganguly later shared his views about the incident in the press conference of an event, stating, "I really don't know why Gambhir was upset. All coaches and captains must have had discussions with the groundsman, sometimes happily, sometimes unhappily. It happened in my time, and it will happen in the future as well. So let's not make too much out of it. The Test match is starting today, and I wish India plays well and wins the Test match."
I don't know what the fuss was about: Shubman Gill on Gautam Gambhir fight with Oval pitch curator
Hours after the incident, the Team India captain, Shubman Gill shared his views on the incident, stating that a coach has every right to view the pitch from nearby and that he did not understand why the pitch curator was not allowing them to take a look at the pitch. He said, “We have played four matches already in this series, and nobody stopped us from watching the pitch. All of us have played so much cricket, we have gone to the pitches so many times, including the coaches and captain, I don't know what the fuss was about."
Speaking of the match, at the end of Day 1 of the fifth and final Test, England looked dominant as they dismissed half of the Indian side. The hopes of the country to find a draw lies on the shoulders of Karun Nair and Washington Sundar as they can boost the chances of India earning a draw by putting up a formidable score for England to chase. India will now rely on their bowling attack to find their rhythm and produce something special at The Oval.
