Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh inspired millions of people when he was awarded player of the series after India won the ODI World Cup in 201, despite suffering from blood cancer. With 362 runs and 15 scalps, Yuvraj went on to give his best for Men in Blue in the tournament in spite of having several repercussions with his health. Recently, Yuvraj’s father and former cricketer Yograj Singh revealed how he motivated his son to not fear death, to inspire him to win the World Cup for India 14 years ago.
In his latest interview on UNFILTERED by Samdish on YouTube, Yograj Singh said that he would have been proud of his son even if he had died and India won the World Cup in 2011. However, Yuvraj Singh overcame every challenge, and went on to win the player of the tournament for his allround performance in that World Cup. However, he had to go through a treatment after the tournament, and successfully fought the cancer within an year.
I wanted Yuvraj to play even when he was spitting blood: Yograj Singh
During the interview, Yograj Singh said that he insisted Yuvraj Singh to play the World Cup even if he spits blood from his mouth, and win the the tournament for India. Despite recovering from the cancer, Yuvraj had to struggle to make his comeback in the Indian team. He went on to play from 2012 to 2014, and made his comeback again in 2016 and 2017. He announced his retirement from international cricket in 2019.
“For our country, if Yuvraj Singh had died from cancer and had won India the World Cup, I would have been a proud father. I still am very proud of him. I have told him this over the phone as well. I wanted him to play even when he was spitting blood. I told him, ‘Don’t worry, you won’t die. Win this World Cup for India,’” Yograj Singh said.
