The 134th edition of the Durand Cup, Asia's oldest football tournament, is set to take place from July 18 to August 23, 2025. The Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) in Assam will once again play a pivotal role, with Kokrajhar confirmed as one of the host cities for the third consecutive year. This announcement was made by BTR Chief Pramod Boro, highlighting the region's growing significance in Indian football.
The tournament will also feature matches in Kolkata, Imphal, and Shillong, promising a vibrant start to the 2025–26 Indian football season. Pramod Boro expressed his enthusiasm about Kokrajhar's continued involvement, stating, "It's official! The Durand Cup is returning to Kokrajhar from 18 July to 23 August 2025!" His statement underscores the region's commitment to promoting football and providing a platform for top-tier competition. The return of the Durand Cup to Kokrajhar is seen as a testament to the successful hosting of previous editions and the local community's passion for the sport.
NorthEast United FC won their maiden Durand Cup title in 2024
Reflecting on the 2024 edition, NorthEast United FC clinched their maiden Durand Cup title in a dramatic final against Mohun Bagan Super Giant, the team with the most Durand Cup titles. The match, held on August 31, 2024, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata, saw NorthEast United come back from a 0-2 deficit to level the score at 2-2, eventually winning 4-3 in a penalty shootout.
Goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh was instrumental, making two crucial saves during the shootout, securing the club's first major trophy. The victory was a significant milestone for NorthEast United FC, marking their emergence as a formidable force in Indian football. The team's success was bolstered by standout performances from players like Moroccan striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie, who scored vital goals throughout the tournament, including in the final.
