India captain Rohit Sharma who will be back in action after a month-long gap following the T20 World Cup 2024 win, opened up on his T20I retirement. Sharma pulled down curtains on his career in the 20-over format following India’s triumph in the marquee tournament a month ago in June 2024. The Indian skipper, who will hit ground after a month in the ODI series against Sri Lanka from Saturday, August 2, said that he is yet to come terms to his T20I retirement.
Ahead of the first ODI, Sharma spoke to the media and said that he is yet to accept that he has retired and it feels like he has been rested and will be called to the team once a big T20 event comes up. Sharma told media, “I feel like, I’ve been rested from the T20s like it used to happen in the past. And there will be big tournament coming up and we have to get ready for T20s again. I still feel it’s like that so I don’t think I’m completely out of the format.”
Not easy to pick a team when you have a quality like that: Rohit Sharma on choosing between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant
India skipper Rohit Sharma admitted that choosing between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the wicketkeeping slot will be a tough call as the duo has won some big games for the country in the past. Sharma said, “It is a tough call. Both are quality players. You know the abilities of both players. It's not easy to pick a team or pick a player when you have a quality like that. That's what these two individuals are all about. They are match winners in their own way. They have won a lot of games for us in the past.”
He added, “It's always nice to have problems picking up the team like that. When you are discussing too much about who to pick and who not to, that means there is a quality in the squad and team. I think it's a good thing to have these kinds of problems. I look forward to these kinds of problems till I am captain."
