
Former Australian cricketer Bob Cowper, who had played 27 Test matches in his career from 1964 to 1968, passed away at the age of 84 years on May 11. Cricket Australia (CA)chairman Mike Baird confirmed Cowper’s passing on Sunday. Known for his elegant stroke play, Cowper is known as the first batter to hit a Test triple hundred on Australian soil. The left-handed batsman scored a famous 307 runs off 589 balls hitting 20 boundaries in a Test match against England at Melbourne Cricket Ground in February 1966.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Cowper who was a hugely respected figure in Australian cricket,” CA Chairman Mike Baird was quoted as saying by Sportstar. “Bob was a wonderful batter who will always be remembered for his famous triple century at the MCG, as well as his strong influence in the Australian and Victorian (state) teams of the 1960s,” he further added.

Talking about Bob Cowper, he had played 27 Test matches in his career where he amassed 2061 runs at an average of 46.84 along with five hundreds and 10 fifties. He made his Test debut against England at Leed on July 2, 1964. He got his first Test hundred in a match against West Indies at Port of Spain in March 1965.
Bob Cowper played his last Test match against England at Leeds in July 1968. Talking about his first-class career, Cowper has scored 10595 runs from 147 matches in first-class cricket with 26 hundreds and 58 half-centuries. Apart from that, he also played four List A matches where he scored 77 runs at an average of 25.66. Post his cricketing career, Cowper became ICC match referee and was also awarded with the Medal of the Order of Australia as a recognition for his contribution to the game of cricket.
