Former Indian sprinter Sangeeta Kumar was found in a miserable condition as the former athlete’s home got crushed in a thunderstorm which struck Delhi on May 2. On Friday morning, the weather wreaked havoc on the residents of Delhi and Sangeeta became one of its victims. Sangeeta, who represented Delhi in the Junior State Championship running in the 1990s, became the centre of attention abruptly after a huge-sized tree fell on her house in the Shahpur Jat area of India’s capital city. Luckily, neither she nor her family members were present in the house when the incident took place. However, the disaster left them helpless on the streets.
Sangeeta looked completely disheartened by the incident but expressed gratitude to luck as her husband Krishan Kumar survived the moment. Her spouse went out to see the bad weather while her children also vacated the house just a few moments before the gruesome tragedy took place. She also revealed that the tree, which had been placed inside a government school, was tilting towards her house for a long time. The former runner also added that the tree was getting consumed by termites and she also requested the school principal to get it removed. In return, the ex-athlete was refurbished by school authorities. "I had given an application for its removal, but the school principal said they wouldn’t touch a leaf," said Sangeeta to PTI.
Sangeeta Kumar claims she got no help from local authorities
Sangeeta, who vied against PT Usha in her junior career, has said that she hasn’t got any help from local authorities. She also asked for assistance from local MLA Shikha Rai but got no support from the political leader. “We approached a lot of people, including the local MLA, but she said it’s not her job to remove the tree,” said Sangeeta.
Following this incident, Sangeeta and her large family of more than 15 folks were helpless as they had taken refuge on the road. However, at the time of crisis, former MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj came out in support by sending a team to assist the former athlete and her family.
