Former Mumbai captain Milind Rege passed away on Wednesday morning, February 19, due to cardiac arrest. Rege made a vital contribution to Mumbai cricket with not just his services during his playing career but also after hanging up his boots in the 1980s. He served Mumbai as managing committee member, selector, and also advisor to MCA. He also took up the role of commentator. Before the start of day three's play between Mumbai and Vidarbha in their Ranji Trophy 2024-25 semi-final match in Nagpur, players from both sides were seen wearing black armbands and observing a moment of silence to pay tribute to the former Mumbai skipper.
Rege was active for Mumbai as a player from 1966 to 1978 and during his 12-year career, he appeared in 52 matches and racked up 1532 runs and 126 wickets. He was also a member of the organising committee during ICC Champions Trophy 2006 games played in Mumbai. Former India players Sandip Patil, and Ravi Shastri were close to Rege. Patil also issued a statement on Rege’s sudden demise.
“At my book release, he said see you in Kolkata, I was waiting for him to visit me. He played a very very important role in my life on and off the field, he and his wife Raj stood behind me in my trying times. Mumbai has lost its biggest supporter, his contribution in helping and building the careers of young talents will remain unmatched. He remained loyal to Dadar Union, CCI, and MCA. Even in his late days he always wanted to be part of Mumbai Cricket as a long-serving selector and Administrator. I will keep missing him,” remarked Patil.
