Ygor de Oliveira Ferreira, better known as Ygor Catatau, was one of the many foreign recruits of Mumbai City FC, who brought him on loan from his parent club Madureira in 2021. He played 11 games for the Islanders, scoring three goals and providing one assist in his loan spell. The winger’s career has come to an abrupt end as he has been permanently banned from all football in relation to a betting case in Brazil.

The Brazilian Sports Court (STJD) banned Catatau, while also handing him a $14000 fine, and his four teammates for their involvement in an illegal betting scheme. He was accused of being a link between a betting ring and four teammates from Sampaio Correa, a second-division club in Brazil, where he played last season.

The STJD has sanctioned 13 professional players who were part of the scandal, with three of them receiving a lifetime ban and six of them getting a suspension of up to 1000 days. Only two players have been fully discharged so far and they can still appeal to the plenary court and can go abroad to continue with their football.

It is important to note that Catatau’s ban from football is applicable only in Brazil and not worldwide but it is unlikely that any club will be willing to sign him after this scandal. Catatau joined Mumbai City in September 2021 on a loan spell and flew back to Maduiera in April 2022. He then joined the Persian club Sephan where he played 12 games before getting the ban.
