A day after Argentina beat France to lift the FIFA World Cup 2022 title, France forward Karim Benzema announced retirement from international football. The 35-year-old took to Twitter to announce his decision on Monday (19 December). Talking about the FIFA World Cup 2022 final, Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick of goals in the final to level the scores but lost the match in penalties.

Benzema, who was earlier named in the national team for the FIFA World Cup 2022, suffered an injury on the eve of the tournament and was thus ruled out. However, there were some hopes of his return ahead of the FIFA after he received a green signal but had put down the request to even watch the match final clash.

The France striker took to Twitter to announce his retirement. " I made the effort and the mistakes it took to be where I am today and I'm proud of it! I have written my story and ours is ending", he tweeted.
