South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the upcoming second Test of the two-match series against Sri Lanka and the all-format tour of Pakistan due to a groin injury. The 24-year-old felt discomfort after bowling on day four of the first Test match between South Africa and Sri Lanka at the Kingsmead in Durban before the scan results revealed a right groin muscle strain, because of which he will be staying on the sidelines between four to six weeks.
During the first Test match against Sri Lanka, which was won by South Africa with a 233-run margin , Gerald Coetzee picked up four wickets, two each in the first and second innings. After complaining about some pain in his groin at lunch time on day four of the contest, he was asked by South African physiotherapist Sizwe Hadebe to bowl in the middle after tending to his issue and strapping the groin area.

In their statement on the official X account, Cricket South Africa (CSA) gave the latest information about Gerald Coetzee’s fitness apart from naming Kwena Maphaka as his replacement in the squad for the second Test match at the St George’s Park in Gqeberha. They wrote, “The 24-year-old experienced discomfort while bowling on day four of the first Test at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Saturday. Results of the scan revealed a right groin muscle strain. His recovery period is estimated to be between four to six weeks.”
Moreover, just a couple of days ago, CSA had announced that all-rounder Wiaan Mulder won’t be taking any part in the remainder of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka due to a fractured right middle finger. The 26-year-old, who has been in very good form with the bat and ball recently, had suffered a severe blow to his finger while batting in South Africa’s first innings on day two of the contest, following which the subsequent X-Rays showed the extent of his injury.
