On Sunday, March 3, Delhi Capitals defeated Gujarat Giants by 25 runs in their Women’s Premier League (WPL) clash at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The Australian duo of Meg Lanning and Jess Jonassen were two of the standout performers for Delhi Capitals, putting them in the top spot on the league standings.
After Beth Mooney, the captain of Gujarat Giants, won the toss, she decided to field first. In the first powerplay, Meghna Singh picked up the key wicket of Delhi Capitals’ Shafali Verma (13) after she was dropped in her follow-through by Tanuja Kanwar.
Alice Capsey gave some much-needed impetus to the DC innings in the powerplay, scoring 27 off 17 with five fours before Meghna Singh scalped her. It led to the captain of Delhi Capitals, Meg Lanning, taking the mantle to score boundaries, reaching a fifty in the process, following which Meghna Singh picked her up as the third wicket of the night.
In the later half of DC innings, Annabel Sutherland and Shikha Pandey provided the finishing touches to help them reach a competitive total of 163/8 with Meghna Singh scalping four batters in her four-over spell.
The run chase for Gujarat Giants had a disappointing start with Laura Woolvardt getting castled by Shikha Pandey without troubling the scorers. Jess Jonassen got into the act with the ball for Delhi Capitals, picking up her fellow Australian Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield in the same over to put Gujarat Giants in deep trouble.
Ashleigh Gardner scored 40 off 31 with five fours and one maximum, but when Jess Jonassen had her stumped through Taniya Bhatia, the hopes of the GG to pull off a win faded drastically. Radha Yadav picked up three wickets of her own for Delhi Capitals, removing the key lower-order batting duo of Kathryn Bryce and Tanuja Kanwar, apart from Veda Krishnamurthy early in the piece, to help restrict Gujarat Giants to 138/8 at the end of the contest.
