In a concerning development from the world of pro-wrestling, WWE superstar Gunther might undergo nose surgery after losing his World Heavyweight Championship to CM Punk. As per the report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer’s daily update, Gunther suffered an issue with his nose while competing in the World Heavyweight Championship match against CM Punk during night one of the first-ever two-night WWE SummerSlam Premium Live Event (PLE), which might force him to stay away from the ring for the time being with a surgery being an option.
The former champion was left bloodied during his clash with CM Punk after the latter tripped him off the Spanish announce table, a moment that proved to be the turning point in the main event of SummerSlam. Visibly shaken and carrying a crimson mask, Gunther appeared rattled as the challenger exposed his vulnerability, to take the world title off of him. At the same time, Meltzer feels the injury was intentional, saying, "It's very clear from watching the finish that Gunther's having surgery on his nose pretty quickly because they shot the angle where, you know, it's like he busted his nose. So that busted nose thing, which was 100 percent, you know, worked blood and planned. I mean, it was totally planned. So, you know, that was the cover for that."
CM Punk lost World Heavyweight Championship to Seth Rollins just minutes after winning it at SummerSlam
After CM Punk defeated Gunther to win his first World Heavyweight Championship in over 12 years, his title reign didn't last long as Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank (MITB) contract, to take the title off of him. With such a massive turn of events happening in the main event of WWE SummerSlam, Punk is expected to go after Rollins with a vengeance, looking to finish him off once and for all.
Notably, following a near 10-year hiatus, CM Punk made a shocking return to WWE at Survivor Series 2023, and then, he had laid out his mission statement of making money and winning titles in the promotion. However, he picked up an injury at the 2024 Royal Rumble that ruled him out of WrestleMania 40, where he was initally scripted to face Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Rollins instead lost the title to Drew McIntyre, who only held it for five minutes. Working on commentary for the bout, Punk attacked McIntyre after his win, opening the door for Damian Priest to cash in his MITB contract and capture the championship.
