In a shocking turn of events, a 21-year-old national gymnastics champion, Kara Welsh was shot dead. Notably, the incident is said to be occurred in an apartment near the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus on August 30. A 23-year-old man named Chad Richards was taken into custody as the incident reportedly took place at his apartment.
Richards, who is the culprit behind it, has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the fatal shooting case. Moreover, according to the criminal complaint, the victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds following a reported altercation. Welsh’s body was found in pool of blood after Richards called 911. The 23-year-old Richards further informed that the two were arguing when he said Welsh grabbed his gun from the nightstand.

Richards further added upon investigation that he wrestled the gun away and shot Welsh because he “feared for his life”, as stated in the complaint. Moreover, the in-depth investigations have found that a handgun and a shell casing was found on the apartment floor, leading to Richards arrest.
Leading to his arrest, Richard made an initial appearance via a video in Walworth County Court on Friday, September 6. Furthermore, the culprit is being held on a $1 million bond with his preliminary hearing scheduled for October 28.
Speaking of the two involved in this tragic incident, Richards hails from Loves Park in Illinois and was listed on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 2021-22 wrestling team roster. Meanwhile Welsh, who is a native of Plainfield, Illinois, was a management major in the University’s College of Business and Economics. She was also a member of the Warhawk gymnastics team and won individual national vault title at the NCAA Division III championships.
