In match number 56 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, which was played between former champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, May 6, the MI skipper, Hardik Pandya was penalised after his team maintained slow over-rate. In an exciting match, which saw rain-interrupt the proceedings at several intervals, saw MI get restricted in their field placements after being short of the timings.
In the penultimate over, the match saw MI field only two players outside the 30-yard circle, which they lost by in a last ball thriller, going down by three wickets. As it was MI’s second offence under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was handed a fine of INR 24 Lakh. Along with him, the other members of the team, including the Impact player and the concussion substitutre were also fined INR 6 Lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees.
Ashish Nehra fined 25 per cent of match fee for violating the spirit of the game
On the other hand, Ashish Nehra, who is serving as GT’s head coach in the IPL, has also been fined for violating the spirit of the game. “Ashish Nehra, Head Coach, Gujarat Titans, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 - which pertains to the conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game - and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction,” IPL’s statement read.
Speaking of the match, it was nothing short of an entertainer as GT pulled off a win from the jaws of MI in a rain-interrupted match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. With a three-wicket win, GT climbed to the top of the points table with eight wins from 11 games so far and 16 points under their name. MI are still in contention of the playoffs, currently placed fourth with 14 points, having won seven games from 12 matches.
