According to fresh reports, BCCI is likely to appoint allrounder Hardik Pandya as captain for the white-ball home series against Sri Lanka, starting from January 3. Notably, Rohit Sharma is still undergoing treatment for his thumb injury and regular skipper is not expected to recover before series against Sri Lanka.
Ever since India suffered a shocking exit from T20 World Cup 2022, a section of cricket experts in the country are backing Hardik Pandya to lead India in the shortest format with an eye on the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to be held in the Caribbean and the USA. A News18 report has hinted that Hardik Pandya will lead Team India against Sri Lanka as the allrounder is expected to be future white-ball captain.
“As of now, it does not look like Rohit Sharma’s finger will heal enough before the T20I and in that case, Hardik Pandya will lead the side. As far as KL Rahul is concerned, his T20I seems numbered,” a source was quoted by News18. Notably, Rahul is currently leading Team India in a two-match Test series against Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the Test series after suffering a thumb injury during the 2nd ODI against Bangladesh. However, the top-order batter came out to bat with an injured-thumb and scored a courageous half-century before India fell short of five runs.
