Indian men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and boxer Lovlina Borgohain have been named India’s flag-bearer at the Asian Games 2023 opening ceremony. The quadrennial event, which has kick started unofficially in China will officially begin from September 23 in Hangzhou, China.
While the opening ceremony for the Games is scheduled for 23rd September, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday confirmed that the sub-continent will have joint flag bearers for the continental showpiece. The Chef de Mission of the Indian contingent, Bhupender Singh Bajwa informed PTI, “We arrived at the decision after much deliberation today. This time we will have two flag bearers leading the contingent at the Asian Games - hockey captain Harmanpreet and boxer Lovlina.”
It is to be noted that India’s ‘Golden Boy’ Neeraj Chopra had done the honours in 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. Additionally, India is sending one of its largest contingent for the Games this season, boasting of 655 athletes competing across 41 disciplines over 61 in total.
Talking of India’s performance so far at the 2023 edition of the Games, while men’s football team succumbed 1-5 to China, the men’s volleyball team is etching history as they have won both their Pool C matches, recently winning over 27th -ranked South Korea. The India rowing team also progressed further in the competition and will be in action on September 21 again.
