If everything goes well and unless there is an unforeseen event or a major dip in form, chances are that NBA star LeBron James might hold on to become the leading all-time scorer of the tournament this season. The Lakers star will head into the 2022-23 season with a grand total of 37,062 regular-season points in his career. This puts him only behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the all-time list who had a total of 38,387 points.

What this essentially means is that James has to overcome a deficit of 1325 points in this season to overcome Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record. Gauging by his average in the most recent seasons gone by, James can breach this record in 40-60 games. Or more precisely, if the 37-years-old averages 25.0 points per game like in the 2020-21 season, he will overtake Abdul-Jabbar in 54 games but if he averages a healthier 30.3 points as in the season 2021-22, it will take him only 44 matches to shatter this record.

Assuming James' form drops below 25, even that does not mean he will have to wait for the next year. An average of as low as 20 will ensure he gets to the mark in 67 games. So it is safe to conclude that James can break this record if not for injury or availability concerns.
