Former Team India all-rounder and now a renowned commentator Irfan Pathan has revealed the details of Rohit Sharma interview which happened before the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Sydney. Prior to the game, Rohit hit the headlines for dropping himself from India’s playing XI for the final Test against Australia. During the tour Down Under, Rohit was struggling to be among the runs. Before the start of the match, Rohit gave an interview to Irfan, who was representing the broadcasters Star Sports.
Recently, Irfan appeared on Lallantop and shared some details regarding that famous chat. The ex-India all-rounder divulged that the broadcasters were obligated to support Rohit, who was terrible with his bat then. Irfan also added that if the star player wasn’t the India skipper then, he would’ve been dropped. "Rohit Sharma is an amazing player in white-ball cricket, but his average in Test cricket that year was 6, so we said that if he was not the captain, he would not have had a place in the team, and this is true,” remarked Irfan.
Rohit Sharma’s performance in his last two Test series
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Rohit Sharma could score only 31 runs in five innings of three games at an egregious average of 6.20. Under his captaincy, India also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia for the first time in 10 years.
Before the Aussie assignment, he was underwhelming as a batter against New Zealand in three Tests at home. Against the Kiwi side, he hoarded only 91 runs in six innings of three contests, at an average of 15.16. India lost that competition by 0-3. It was India’s first Test series defeat at home after 12 years.
