India’s opening batter, KL Rahul is struggling to find his mojo ever since his return to cricket in 2022. Be it white-ball cricket or red-ball cricket, Rahul is not performing to the expectations and his reputation. As Rahul failed in the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2022-23, the calls for his exclusion from the playing XI got louder. Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad opined that Rahul should not play the second Test.

However, the Indian team management showed faith in the opener once again for the second Test. But the move backfired as Rahul departed cheaply yet again. The 30-year-old could only manage 17 runs in the first innings. This infuriated Prasad who shared another long thread of Tweets criticising the Indian team management’s decision to include Rahul. Prasad said that this decision has shaken his belief in the system.
The former India pacer also said that he does not consider Rahul among the top three openers in Indian cricket. In fact, the 30-year-old is only among the top 10 openers for Prasad. He further stated that as Rohit Sharma has been saying that they are backing players basis horses for courses, Prasad does not consider Rahul as the best example for that.
“And the torrid run continues. More to do with rigidity of the management to persist with a player who just hasn’t looked the part. No top order batsman in atleast last 20 years of Indian cricket has played these many tests with such a low average. His inclusion is ….,” tweeted Prasad.
“His inclusion shakes belief in Justice. SS Das had great potential,so did S Ramesh, both avgd 38+but did not get beyond 23 test matches. Rahul’s consistent inclusion gives an impression of lack of batting talent in India which isn’t true. Last 5 years his avg is below 27 in 47 inn.”
“As per me, he is currently not amongst the current 10 best opener’s in India but is being given endless chances. Guys like Kuldeep Yadav put in man of the match performances and next game are dropped with theories like Horses for courses. In any course ,KL is not a horse. Sad,” Prasad added.
