England's disappointing ODI World Cup campaign in 2023 has almost ended their hopes of defending their title, as they have lost four games in the tournament so far (in their first five games) against teams like New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. England is almost virtually knocked out of the tournament with four losses in five games unless some miracle happens, here in this article, we will look at whether England still has a chance to qualify for the semi-finals.
England's remaining schedule in ODI World Cup 2023:
vs India in Lucknow, 29th Oct
vs Australia in Ahmedabad, 4th Nov
vs Netherlands in Pune, 8th Nov
vs Pakistan in Kolkata, 11th Nov
ODI World Cup 2023 Points Table:
South Africa - 5 wins (6 games)
India - 5 wins (5 games)
New Zealand - 4 wins (5 games)
Australia - 3 wins (5 games)
Sri Lanka - 2 wins (5 games)
Pakistan - 2 wins (6 games)
Afghanistan - 2 wins (5 games)
Bangladesh - 1 win (5 games)
England - 1 win (5 games)
Netherlands - 1 win (5 games)
Note: Points table updated till SA vs PAK game (Match-26)
Now, England can end with a maximum of 5 wins in this ODI World Cup 2023 if they win their remaining four games in this tournament.
If England wins their remaining four games, then teams like India, Australia, Netherlands and Pakistan will lose one more game.
- Netherlands already have four losses and if they go on to lose another game against England then they will have five losses in the table and end up below England.
- Pakistan already have four losses and if they go on to lose another game against England then they will have five losses in the table and end up below England.
- Bangladesh should lose one more game in the remainder of the schedule where they will be playing against sides like Netherlands, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia.
Now it will be better if Bangladesh lose to Netherlands as the Netherlands already stand below England and also if Bangladesh beats Sri Lanka and Australia then it will be very helpful for England as those two sides will lose one more game.
- Afghanistan should lose two more games in their remaining schedule where they will be playing against sides like Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Australia and South Africa.
Now it will be better if Afghanistan loses to the Netherlands and South Africa as the Netherlands remain below England and South Africa is very much above in the points table, while Afghanistan beating Sri Lanka and Australia will be very helpful for England as their contemporary side will lose one more game.
- Sri Lanka should lose two more games in their remaining schedule of ODI World Cup 2023. As per the above points, Sri Lanka would lose to Bangladesh and Afghanistan, hence they will also go below England in the points table.
- Australia should lose three more games in their remaining schedule of ODI World Cup 2023. As per the above points, Australia would lose to England, Bangladesh and Afghanistan hence they will also go below England in the points table.
If all these results happen, then, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia would go below England in the points table with only four wins in the table, hence England can qualify for the semi-finals of ODI WC 2023 with five wins.
Majorly, England would need help from both Bangladesh and Afghanistan to beat sides like Sri Lanka and Australia.
