After winning the toss, Australia started off brilliantly with the ball by picking up wickets at regular intervals. First, it was Shubman Gill and then captain Rohit Sharma perished after an incredible 47. The troubles continued as the in-form Shreyas Iyer also departed at two. Here Virat Kohli and KL Rahul built a crucial partnership.
But with boundaries drying up, the pressure was still on the Indians. This constant pressure made way for Virat Kohli's wicket as the highest runscorer of the tournament departed on 54. The batting struggles continued as India only managed to post 240.
Then in the second innings, the Indian team rocked back into the contest by reducing Australia to 46-3. Indian pacers were on song as the ball swung all around the pitch. But as Travis Head held one end up and regularly found boundaries. Supporting Head, Marnus Labuschagne also batted brilliantly as the Indian bowling attack was neutralised.
As the Indian bowlers dropped their shoulders, the Head- Labuschagne grew in confidence. Soon the left-handed opener reached his century as Australia neared the World Cup. Though Head departed at 137, Glenn Maxwell hit winning runs and clinched the sixth title for Australia.
