Preview

India won the three-match T20I series 2-1 and now the focus shifts to the 50-over format. With India’s regulars ready to board the flight to Australia, a young team led by Shikhar Dhawan will take on the Proteas in the three ODIs. Shreyas Iyer will be playing Dhawan’s deputy in the absence of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. Meanwhile, South Africa will continue playing their stalwarts. It will be interesting to see if a young Indian lineup gets the best of a full-fledged South African team.

Pitch Report

The Lucknow pitch is not so suitable for modern-day cricket with lesser pace and dryness. As it will be a day-night game, the team batting first will struggle a bit. Spinners will get to play a part in both innings.

Team Analysis

India

Shikhar Dhawan-led India will be eager to take on South Africa as most of the faces in the squad are fresh. But that does not mean that there is a dearth of experience. With players like Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishan Kishan, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar; India have pretty much all the bases covered. While Shubman Gill and Dhawan will be expected to open the innings, Iyer, Samson and Kishan will bat in the middle order. Shahbaz Ahmad may make his maiden appearance for India with him being the only spin-bowling all-rounder. Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, and Siraj are expected to form the pace attack.

South Africa

After beating India by 49 runs in the last T20I, Temba Bavuma-led South Africa will enter the first ODI high on confidence. Quinton de Kock and David Miller are in a good form with enough runs in the bag. The pace trio of Wayne Parnell, Kagiso Rabada, and Lungi Ngidi also got the act together after the hammering in the second T20I. Keshav Maharaj is playing his role to perfection while Tabraiz Shamsi can come in handy at the dry pitches. However, the biggest concern for South Africa heading into this game is their captain’s form who scored three runs in the three innings he played. It will be interesting to see if Bavuma hits form this series or do the lean patch gets prolonged.

Conclusion

South Africa have a relatively stronger (experienced) team as compared to India and hence they will be the favourites to win the first ODI in Lucknow.
