After submitting a letter of intent in October 2024 for hosting the Olympic games in 2036, India have also opened an ‘informal’ dialogue with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to host the Commonwealth games in 2030. Notably, India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and are eyeing on hosting the mega event again after 20 years. Recently, CGF president Chris Jenkins and chief executive Katie Sadlier travelled to multiple cities and met with central and state governments and senior bureaucrats in Gandhinagar, Bhubaneswar and New Delhi.
In 2010, New Delhi hosted all the events during the Commonwealth games. However, Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar emerged as front runners to host the Commonwealth if India wins the bid for 2030, as reported by Indian Express. Notably, Chris Jenkins and Katie Sadlier also travelled to Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar during their visit.
India eyes on hosting 2030 Commonwealth games
During the National Games opening ceremony in Dehradun, CGF President Chris Jenkins also met with Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president P T Usha. Notably, IOA compounded as the governing body for the Commonwealth games in India.
“CGF President Chris Jenkins was recently invited to attend the opening ceremony of the National Games in India, taking this opportunity to continue to strengthen ties between India, Commonwealth Games India, and Commonwealth Sport. The CGF recently put out the call for Expressions of Interest for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and beyond, and, during his visit to India, President Jenkins had some informal chats around this process,” CGF said as quoted in Indian Express.
During his three-day stay in Ahmedabad, Chris Jenkins alos met with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupnedra Patel along with State Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi and senior government officials. During the meeting, the state officials also asserted ambition to host the Olympics games in 2036
