India’s ambition to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games comes amid a broader push to elevate its global sporting profile. It also tends to reflect an enthusiasm in India to host major international sporting events, bolstered by the country’s aspirations to also bid for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Unlike the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which will feature a truncated program due to logistical and financial challenges, India’s 2030 bid reportedly aims to deliver a comprehensive event.

As part of a major development in India’s plans, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially approved India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The decision, made during a Special General Meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, August 13, marks a significant step in India’s journey to showcase its sporting infrastructure and organizational prowess on an international stage. According to a report, an expression of interest was already submitted in March, but India now faces a critical deadline to formalize its bid by August 31, 2025. According to the reports, IOA’s Executive Council member Harpal Singh reflects the sentiment stating, “Hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games is a natural, or right, step in the direction of hosting the Olympics in 2036.”

Ahmedabad emerges as likely host city of 2030 Commonwealth Games: Reports

Reports claim that Ahmedabad is poised to take center stage as the primary candidate city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. A delegation from Commonwealth Sport, led by Director of Games Darren Hall, recently visited the city to inspect venues and meet with officials from the Gujarat government. The visit was part of a broader evaluation to assess the city’s infrastructure and readiness. Reportedly, IOA President PT Usha also confirmed Ahmedabad being one of the venues to host the games. She stated, “Ahmedabad is not the only venue. Bhubaneswar is also a prominent contender. Some of the facilities are in Delhi as well.”

The reported development of Naranpura Sports Complex, and proposed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Enclave and Karai Sports Complex signals India’s commitment to meeting the Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF) requirements for hosting a full-scale, sustainable event. The withdrawal of Canada from the 2030 bidding race, as reported last month, further bolsters India’s chances. This move reportedly also underscores India’s intent to leverage its experience from hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and build a legacy of sporting excellence.
