India women's hockey team's winning run at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games came to a halt on Wednesday. While Gurjit Kaur yet again had given India the lead early in the match by converting a penalty corner, Argentina did manage to equalise in the second quarter as their captain Noel Barrionuevo scored the equaliser. Barrionuevo scored again in the third quarter to put Argentina in the lead and although the Indian team fought hard in the final few minutes to level the scores, eventually it was Argentina that held their nerves to book a place for themselves in the final.

Argentina will now be up against the Netherlands in the gold medal match while all is not lost for the Indian team as they will have to buckle and play Great Britain in the bronze medal match on Friday.

Earlier, the women's team beat three-time champions Australia in their quarterfinal match to reach their first-ever semis in the history of the Olympic games. After taking the lead in the 22nd minute, India were spot on with their defence work, denying the opponents even a single goal. It was also the first time Australia conceded through a penalty corner at the ongoing Games which suggests the magnitude of India's achievement by reaching so far.

The Rani Rampal-led side will now look to give their best to come back with a bronze, which will be no less than the biggest of achievements, given the grit and fight the women have shown at the Olympics this year.
