While ATK Mohun Bagan had edged out NorthEast United (3-2 on aggregate) in the semifinal to reserve a place in the final of the Indian Football League 2020-21 season, Mumbai City FC and FC Goa were 2-2 on aggregate before Mumbai beat Goa 6-5 in the penalties to reach their maiden final.
Although Mumbai had already finished the league stage as the toppers and sealed a place for themselves in the AFC Champions League, they would want to win the final to put the icing on the cake. However, against ATK Mohun Bagan they would face perhaps their biggest battle as they have been at this stage and done it before, although that was before the merger. ATK Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC have played each other twice this season and on both the occasions it was the Mumbai side that emerged victorious. However, this time around it will be a different ball game. A win here for ATKMB will be the perfect way to avenge their previous defeats as it will come in the finals. However, given the form that Mumbai has carried throughout the tournament, there is no reason to think they can't get the better of ATKMB for the third time this season. It will be more a battle of nerves, with probably very less to differentiate the two sides from the skills point of view. A blockbuster clash is sure to end the season.
