The Indian cricket team has participated in all the nine editions of the ICC Champions Trophy, including the 2025 tournament, which is currently ongoing in Pakistan and the UAE. The Men in Blue are in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where they will be taking on New Zealand, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, aiming to win their third title in tournament’s history.

In this article, SportsTiger looks back at all the ICC Champions Trophy campaign over the years for the Indian cricket team.

1998 - Semi-finalists

1998 semi finalists In the ICC Champions Trophy 1998, which was then called ICC Knockout Trophy, the Indian cricket team reached the semi-final of the competition in Bangladesh, where they were defeated by West Indies with a six-wicket margin. They had qualified through to this clash after beating Australia in the quarter-final by 44 runs.

2000 - Runners-Up yuvraj singh s 84 versus australia in the 2000 quarter final The ICC Champions Trophy 2000, still called the ICC Knockout Trophy, was hosted by Kenya, and over there, India got the better of Australia by 20 runs in the quarter-final before dismantling the challenge of South Africa by 95 runs in the semi-final. But in the grand finale, which was a close contest, India lost to New Zealand in the last over by six wickets, to end their campaign on a tough note.

2002 - Co-Champions

2002 co champions India played some exceptional cricket throughout the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 in Sri Lanka, brushing aside the challenge of Zimbabwe and England in the group stage, to reach the semi-final, where they made an epic comeback, to defeat South Africa by 10 runs. In the final of the tournament against Sri Lanka, rain played spoilsport for two straight evenings, which meant that they had to share the trophy with the hosts after an impressive tournament for captain Sourav Ganguly.

2004 - Group Stage

2004 group stage The ICC Champions Trophy 2004 was hosted by England, and in this tournament, India were far from their best as they were eliminated from the group stage itself. After defeating Kenya by a comprehensive margin, the Indian cricket team lost to their arch-rivals Pakistan by three wickets, to bow out of the tournament without making the knockout stage for the first-time ever.

2006 - Group Stage

2006 group stage India hosted the ICC Champions Trophy for the first-time in 2006, but they performed relatively poorly in the tournament, to get eliminated from the group stage. Following a win over England by four wickets in their first match, they suffered two consecutive losses against West Indies and Australia, to have a  forgettable home ICC tournament.

2009 - Group Stage

2009 group stage The Indian cricket team lost to the arch-rivals Pakistan by 54 runs in their opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 group stage in South Africa. Their second group stage match against Australia was a wash-out, while the third match resulted in a good win versus West Indies, but it wasn’t enough to make the semi-final of the competition.

2013 - Champions

2013 champions The ICC Champions Trophy 2013, played in England, was a flawless campaign for the Indian cricket team, winning all the five matches, to clinch the title for the second time in their history, thanks mainly to Shikhar Dhawan's batting exploits. Following wins over South Africa, West Indies, and Pakistan in group stage, India got the better of Sri Lanka in the semi-final by eight wickets before a rain-curtailed final against the hosts England saw them win by five runs at the Edgbaston in Birmingham.

2017 - Runners-Up

2017 runners up virat kohli In the 2017 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy, which was also played in England, the Indian cricket team won two matches against Pakistan and South Africa, while losing to Sri Lanka in group stage, but it was enough for them to reach the semi-final. Bangladesh were beaten comprehensively by India with a nine-wicket margin, but they lost the final at The Oval in London to arch-rivals Pakistan by 180 runs.

2025 - Finalists*

2025 finalists After playing all their matches in Dubai, the Indian cricket team reached the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 after winning four matches in a row, including three in group stage against Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand, before scraping past Australia in the semi-final. The final is also set to be played at the Dubai International Stadium between India and New Zealand, to decide the new champions of the coveted tournament.
