The Indian Premier League 2023 mini-auction will have a tie-breaker rule, which has made its appearance a handful of times in the tournament’s history. With this year’s auction being after a mega-auction, many teams will be low in funds and hence this rule could come into play. The rule kicks in when a team has emptied its purse while bidding on a particular player, and hence the IPL authorities have made arrangements to get the player sold through secret bids.

The competing teams, bidding on a certain player, will be invited to submit secret bids in a sealed envelope, and the highest bidder here will be given the rights to the player. The player will be paid the amount equaling the last matching bid and the additional money set by the franchise will go to the BCCI.

“The tie break bid will indicate the amount, payable in one installment that the franchise is prepared to pay to BCCI. The amount of the tie-break bid is separate from and in addition to the amount of the last bid. The tie break bid is the separate amount, which the franchise is prepared to pay to BCCI and is not deducted from the relevant franchise’s salary cap. There is no limit on the amount of the tie break bid,” BCCI told franchises in the auction brief.

In the 15 years of the tournament, the tie breaker rule has made an appearance thrice. The first time the rule was in action was during the 2010 auction when the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings were bidding on West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard. Both teams had exhausted their purses at $750,000 and the Mumbai-based franchise won the bid via this rule.

Another case of the tie breaker rule occurred in the same auction, which allowed the Kolkata Knight Riders to sign New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond. The third and last time the rule was in play, was in the 2012 auction when Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers (now Sunrisers Hyderabad) had exhausted their purse to bid for Ravindra Jadeja. This led to the tie breaker, where Chennai eventually signed Jadeja.
