German F1 driver Sebastian Vettel, who retired from Formula One at the end of the 2022 season,  expressed that this decision feels like a big weight off his shoulders. The 35-year-old capped off an incredible career where he won four World Champions in a span of 15 years.

The F1 world came together to celebrate the German motorsports legend. Recently, Vettel received the Gregor Grant Lifetime Achievement Award at the Autosports Awards 2022. F1 journalist Luke Smith presented him with this honour at the Grosvenor House, where talked about his life after Formula One.

After receiving the award, Vettel said, “It’s not that I hate Formula 1, I enjoyed the last couple of races, and after the announcement, it was a big weight off my shoulders because this sport has been in my head a long time and I’m very much looking forward to giving my children the time that I had when I was that age. My parents made so much time for me and I want to be there as well.”

Vettel also spoke about whether he misses racing and stated that he has now become more aware of his passion as earlier he took it for granted. He said, “What I love so much – initially I didn’t get it because you’re young, but I think the opportunity to work with so many people that are very passionate about what they do. I thought 10 years ago, ‘That’s normal, it’s how everybody lives their lives’. But then I found out it’s not normal and a lot of people don’t have that privilege.”

Going back to Vettel, the Aston Martin driver hangs his boots after putting together one of the greatest Formula 1 careers in history. Along with his World titles, Vettel has 53 race victories to his name. He also holds the record of being the youngest winner of the World Drivers' Championship. The German at the age of 23 years and 134 days won the 2010 championship with Red Bull.
