On Saturday, May 3, during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s close two-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Dewald Brevis’ dismissal caught attention of several, igniting some kind of controversy. Elaborating on the incident, the moment unfolded in 17 th over as CSK were chasing the target of 214 runs in IPL 2025.
Coming out to bat after Lungi Ngidi dismissed set-batter in Ayush Mhatre for 94 off 48 deliveries, Brevis hoped to take the inning forward. On the very first delivery that he faced, Brevis missed the ball as it rapped on the pads. Soon afterwards, he was adjudged out and by the time Brevis tried to review it, the umpire informed him of the clock being run out, bringing in a new controversy.
It's Brevis' fault, not the umpire's: Virender Sehwag berates CSK batter
However, seeing this, the on-field umpire asked Brevis to walk off the field, former India cricketer, Virender Sehwag also shared his views on the incident and offered to put the blame on the CSK batter. Speaking with Cricbuzz, Sehwag claimed that it was Brevis’ fault and not umpire’s.
"Only Brevis can tell us why he didn't take the review in time. Why was he so late? It's Brevis' fault, not the umpire's. The timer is shown on the big screen. He ran for a single and then he went for the second. Don't you know that the umpire has given you out?" Sehwag said on Cricbuzz. "Okay, I understand it was a wrong decision. It was a blunder, it was missing the stump. The DRS is there to get rid of the howlers. As soon as the umpire gave his decision, the timer of 15 seconds started at the ground. It's okay, we didn't get to see that on the screen. Why did he take so much time?" he added.
While this wicket proved to be a crucial one for RCB, CSK were handed a big jolt as they eventually went onto lose the game by mere two runs. On the other hand, RCB, who are having a near perfect season, climbed up and reclaimed the top spot in the points table, almost confirming their playoffs berth.
