James Maddison sparked injury concerns after falling on his knee during Tottenham’s 1-1 pre-season draw against Newcastle United in South Korea, leaving the pitch on a stretcher. Spurs had gone ahead through Brennan Johnson, only for Harvey Barnes to level for the Magpies before the break. The match carried added significance as it could prove to be Son Heung-min’s final outing for the club, with the forward having announced his intention to leave this summer amid interest from Major League Soccer (MLS).
The injury happened when Maddison was chasing the ball when he suddenly went down, covering his face with his hands, having no contact with an opponent. Spurs boss Thomas Frank, along with Maddison’s teammates and the backroom staff, looked visibly concerned as they assessed the situation.
During the briefing with the media after the match, Frank remarked that the injury looked bad, while also revealed that Maddison had missed the end of last season with the same knee issue after recovering from the setback in early May. He has been gradually building up his minutes during the ongoing pre-season. Maddison was sidelined for the remainder of the Premier League campaign.
Son Heung-min received guard of honor as he left the club
During the press conference, Son Heung- min, forward and captain for both Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur and the South Korea national team, mentioned his decision to leave the club. He received the guard of honor before the match at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea. He said, "Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision. It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision."
Frank, who recently took the managerial role is facing quite a tough time due to the outgoing of Son, injury of Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski. Moreover, there were high hopes of Tottenham signing Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, but the deal was rejected.
