Jasmine Paolini created a history as she became the second women from Italy to win the Rome Open singles championship. She defeated former US Open champion Coco Gauff in straight sets to get second Rome Open title for Italy after Raffaella Reggi became the first women from the country to win the title in 1985.

Along with her singles title, Jasmine Paolini also paired up with her country mate, Sara Errani as the duo defeated the Russian and Belgian pair of Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Merten respectively by 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday to win the women's doubles title. Notably, Paolini and Errani also helped Italy to win their first-ever Olympic gold in tennis in 2024.

Made the final maybe not playing my best tennis: Coco Gauff after losing Italian Open final

Talking about Coco Gauff, the star American tennis player went on to lose her back-to-back finals on clay. Last month, she lost the Madrid Open final against world number one Aryna Sabalenka, and now, she lost the Italian Cup final against Jasmine Paolini. However, the 21-year-old is confident that she might be lucky the third time and end up winning the Roland Garros.

"Hopefully I can get to the final in Roland Garros and maybe the 'third time is a charm' thing is a real thing. "Overall, I lost to two quality opponents, Aryna in Madrid and Jasmine here. So yeah, I think I have a lot to improve, a lot that I can work on,” Gauff was quoted as saying by India Today.

"I made the final with those errors. Made the final maybe not playing my best tennis. It just gives me confidence if I can find that good form heading into Roland Garros, I can do well there," she further added.
