In a recent development, Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown's agent Jason Glushon has reportedly claimed that the 26-year-old has decided to accept the most expensive contract in NBA history, a five-year, $304 million supermax contract extension. Given the growth in the salary cap and league income, Brown's contract is more expensive than the $276 million extension Nikola Jokic signed with the Denver Nuggets.
To finalize the agreement, the 26-year-old Brown underwent a physical test on Monday in Boston. Sunday night in Boston, Brown, and Glushon met with Celtics management and ownership to complete the last details of the historic agreement that keeps the two-time All-Star under contract until the 2028–29 season.
According to ESPN, in the first season of the contract, 2024–25, Brown is expected to earn $52.3 million. In the last season of the contract, 2028–29, Brown is expected to earn $69.1 million. However, if he signed the extension, he cannot have a no-trade clause.
In each of Brown's seven NBA seasons, the Celtics have advanced to the playoffs, including three visits to the Eastern Conference Finals and the NBA Finals in 2022. With the third overall pick in 2016, Boston selected Brown.
Brown qualified for the Celtics' five-year supermax extension after being named to the second team in the All-NBA honors in 2022-23. One of the NBA's most prolific duos, Brown and teammate Jayson Tatum, who is up for a supermax extension next summer, are the foundation of the championship-contending Celtics.
Last season, Brown averaged 26.6 points and 49% shooting, both career highs. In the last year of his prior contract, he will earn $31.8 million next season.
