On Sunday, June 22, American mixed martial artist Jon Jones announced retirement from professional UFC. Jones, who is one of the most dominant as well as controversial figures in the sport, confirmed his decision through a social media post with UFC CEO Dana White also confirming the move.
Taking to X, Jones wrote, “Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from the UFC. This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced over the years.” It is to be noted that Jones decision comes as a surprise with UFC working to book a heavyweight title unification bout between him and the interim champion, Tom Aspinall.

“From the first time I stepped into the Octagon, my goal was to push the boundaries of what was possible in this sport. Becoming the youngest UFC champion in history, defending my title against some of the best fighters in the world, and sharing unforgettable moments with fans across the globe—these are memories I’ll cherish forever,” he further added.
The 37-year-old further went on to thank the UFC and its key members including CEO Dana White, among others, White also reiterated on “Bones” decision. "Jon Jones called us last night and retired," White said during a news conference in Azerbaijan, where UFC Fight Night took place.
During the conference, White also announced Tom Aspinall as the new champion, stating, "Jon Jones is officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC." The UFC Chief also confirmed that the body will work closely with undisputed champion next week on book his first title defense.
