The German Open 2023 in Berlin saw an unexpected and unpleasant conclusion to Jule Niemeier's run. During her match with Marketa Vondrousova in the second round, she slipped and tumbled to the ground, forcing her to forfeit the match. On Friday at the Steffi Graf Stadion, Niemeier took on Vondrousova. Both players gave it their all as the second set appeared to be heading for a tie-break following a dramatic opening set that Vondrousova won.

Niemeier hurt her right wrist as she slid awkwardly at 5-6 and tumbled to the ground. The 23-year-old started crying after receiving medical care and eventually announced her departure from the competition. Niemeier, who had a disappointing run at the Nottingham Open, advanced to the main draw of the Grasscourt C'ships in Berlin after victories over Noma Akugue Noha and Greet Minnen.

Ons Jabeur, the fourth seed and the reigning champion, was upset by the German in the first round when she was defeated 7-6(4), 6-4. Her chances of making a strong finish in Berlin, though, were dashed due to the sudden injury. The Madrid Open saw Jule Niemeier's finest performance of the year. She defeated players like Wang Xinyu and Petra Kvitova, a 10th seed, before losing to Elise Mertens in the third round. Niemeier now has a season win-loss record of 5-13 with a win percentage of 27.77.
