Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has talked about his decision of keeping Jules Kounde away from his team's starting XI against Rayo Vallecano in the La Liga 2024-25 game on February 17, 2025. In the crucial contest, Barca clinched a 1-0 victory after their star player Robert Lewandowski’s penalty goal. The victory has taken Barcelona to the top of the points table, with 51 points and 16 victories in 24 matches.
After the game, Kounde’s absence from the starting XI became a hot topic for Barca fans. France footballer has been an integral part of Barca’s superb campaign. In his place, Hector Fort was given the opportunity to feature in the 11-member squad. However, Kounde’s ousting from the XI can be seen as a punishment for arriving late at a team meeting. Flick, who is known for his disciplined behaviour, decided to punish the French footballer for his tardiness and laxity. The 26-year-old faced similar punishment this season against his side’s clash against Alves.
Flick spoke on the matter but refused to make it big. “Koundé out of the starting XI for being late? Well, these things happen in football. It's part of football; these things happen. It's match day, and for me, everyone knows what needs to be done before the game. There are two or three meetings with the players, and it is crucial that they attend these meetings. It's not that difficult to comply. It's a matter of respect. I need to have a word with him. He arrived late, but this is a rule that needs to be clearly understood. That's what happened today," said Kounde.
Barcelona FC surpasses Real Madrid to take top spot in the points table
With Monday’s victory, Barcelona have outclassed Real Madrid on the points tally, accumulating 51 points. The defending champions have also racked up the same number on the tally but the superior goal difference has helped Barca to get on the top spot. After defeating Rayo, Barca will next square off with Las Palmas in the Sunday match on February 23.
Back in November 2024, Barca faced a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Las Palmas and this time, they will look to settle the scores. Palmas are in the 17th spot on the table with 23 points earned through six wins.
