Legendary South African pacer Dale Steyn announced his retirement from all forms of the game on Tuesday. The Proteas pacer announced the decision through his Twitter handle, bringing to an end a glittering 17-year career. One of South Africa’s greatest fast bowlers, Steyn picked up 699 international wickets at an average of 23.37 in 265 matches. He scalped 439 Test wickets in 93 matches, 196 ODI wickets in 125 matches and 64 T20I wickets in 47 matches.

Steyn wrote in his retirement note, "And it's been a long December and there's reason to believe maybe this year will be better than last. I can't remember all the times I tried to tell myself to hold on to these moments as they pass."

"It's been 20 years of training, matches, travel, wins, losses, strapped feet, jetlag, joy, and brotherhood. There are too many memories to tell. Too many faces to thank. So I left it to the experts to sum up, my favourite band, the Counting Crows.

"Today I officially retire from the game I love the most. Bitter sweet but grateful. Thank you everyone, from family to teammates, journalists to fans, it's been an incredible journey together."

Dale Steyn finished as the second highest-wicket taker for South Africa in international cricket.
