In a big update doing rounds on social media, West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard is likely to join the former world champions for the T20 World Cup 2024. Pollard, who dons the role of batting coach for the Mumbai Indians in Indian Premier League (IPL), will take charge of the Three Lions as consultant for the marquee event, set to be held in June 2024 in West Indies and the USA.
However, the deal hasn’t been put to paper so far, but the development comes after England Head Coach, Rob Key recently blamed himself for not involving a local during England’s title defence at the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. “I hold myself accountable for a lot of it really. I’ve set up a coaching team that had no local experience, really. Actually, someone who knows these conditions really well says, ‘By the way, it’s hotter than the sun out there; make sure you have a bat’,” said Key.
It is to be further noted that the appointment of Pollard, if so happens will allow him to reunite with his former teammate and England captain Jos Buttler. Pollard played alongside Buttler for Somerset in 2010 and 2011. Furthermore, it is being reported that ECB is likely to announce this decision before the series against Pakistan in May.
England became one of the first teams to knock out of the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. The Jos Buttler-led side had a dismal outing at the marquee event last month. They could register only three wins from nine games in the league stage, finishing seventh in the standings with six points.
