The Chief Selector of Team India, Ajit Agarkar on Monday, named India’s 17-member squad for the 50-over Asia Cup 2023. The former India cricketer along with skipper Rohit Sharma in a press conference announced the squad for the continental tournament, which saw the return of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and even Jasprit Bumrah, who has looked brilliant with the ball in the ongoing Ireland series.
While addressing the press-conference on Monday at the Taj Palace in Mumbai, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar also opened up on the inclusion of the two players who continue to recover from injuries. The 45-year-old informed that KL Rahul will play a key role as wicketkeeper batter for the side. However, he added that KL has a slight niggle and hopes that he gets fit just before the first game, which will see the Men in Blue play arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2.
“KL Rahul will play as wicketkeeper batsman in Asia Cup,” Agarkar said. “We are hopeful that KL will be okay by the time we will be playing our first match,” Ajit further added. He also added that it is because of KL’s niggle that Sanju Samson has been named as a back-up for the side.

Another notable inclusion was that of Shreyas Iyer. The Indian batter, who sustained an injury during the Border Gavaskar Trophy, earlier this year in India has been declared fit for the marquee event, set to be played from August 30 to September 17 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
