On June 12, Monday, the Madras High Court decided to start proceedings regarding the contempt of court case filed by the former Indian cricketer MS Dhoni against the Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sampath Kumar. According to the honourable high court, the case hearing will happen on June 15, Thursday.
Earlier, MS Dhoni had urged the court to punish Sampath Kumar for his remarks against the High Court and Supreme Court in his written statement, in response to the INR 100 crore defamation case filed by the cricketer against the IPS officer in 2014 for naming him in the betting scam of the Indian Premier League.
It was R. Shanmugasundaram, the Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, who granted permission to MS Dhoni to move his case petition as per the Contempt of Courts Act. This happened after the Advocate General agreed that the remarks from Sampath Kumar in his written statement were akin to scandalising the proceedings of the court.
Furthermore, Justices M. Sundar and K.Govindarajan told P.R. Raman, the senior counsel representing MS Dhoni, and the Advocate Perumbalavil Radhakrishnan counselling on behalf of Sampath Kumar, that the Madras High Court hears the contempt of court case on Thursday every week, so this case would also be heard on June 15, Thursday.
Meanwhile, on the cricket field, the former Indian cricketer, who captained Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League 2023 edition, won the title for the record-equalling fifth time, joint-highest with Mumbai Indians, on May 29 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The victory came on the last ball of the match when Ravindra Jadeja smashed Mohit Sharma of Gujarat Titans for four runs towards the deep fine-leg boundary. The final was decided on the DLS method as CSK were able to defeat GT by 5 wickets in a pulsating encounter.
