On Saturday, August 10, Manchester City defeated Manchester United 7-6 on penalties, to win the FA Community Shield 2024 at the Wembley Stadium in London. After United took the lead through Alejandro Garnacho, it was Bernardo Silva, who levelled it up at 1-1 for City, to force a penalty shootout in the curtain raiser for the new club football season in the UK.
After a slow start to the FA Community Shield, Manchester City got themselves on the front foot, with James McAtee hitting the far upright after a curling effort from left to right in the 25th minute. For Manchester United, their captain Bruno Fernandes got the ball in the back of the 54th minute, only for the flag to go up.
In the 75th minute, Marcus Rashford had a great opportunity to break the deadlock, but his strike came off the outside of the left post. But then, Alejandro Garnacho put Manchester United in a 1-0 lead in the 82th minute after cutting inside from the right to send a left-foot shot from 18 yards into the bottom right-hand corner.
With the full-time whistle around the corner, Bernardo Silva scored the equaliser for Manchester City off a stunning header after Oscar Bobb picked him out perfectly inside the six yard box.
During the penalty shootout, Manchester United took an early 2-0 lead, but then, Manchester City managed to force a sudden death situation. At 6-6, Jonny Evans sent one over the bar before Manuel Akanji scored the winning penalty, to secure the FA Community Shield trophy for Manchester City.
