Despite the 38-year-old's defeat, India managed their best-ever performance at Tokyo 2020. While they had won 5 medals until the penultimate day with their best tally being of 6 medals at London 2012, wrestler Bajrang Punia's bronze added with Neeraj Chopra's historic gold medal helped India better their previous best in some style. Notably, the country had not won a gold in 2012 and this was their first gold since 2008 where Abhinav Bindra had become the first individual Olympic gold-medallist.

National hero Neeraj dedicates historic gold medal to Late Milkha Singh

While independent India had not won a single medal in track and field (athletics), Neeraj ended the nation's drought not by any other medal but with the best one on offer. He later dedicated the gold to Late Milkha Singh who had famously finished fourth in the 1960 Rome Olympics 400 m final. Ever since his golden throw, the 23-year-old has become a nationwide hero with several awards and recognition coming his way.
