Global T20 Canada 2024 released a statement addressing the massive controversy created by Shakib Al Hasan. The Bangladesh cricketer a s the captain of the Bangla Tigers Mississauga refused to play a super over against the Toronto Nationals to determine the winner of the Eliminator, resulting in his team getting eliminated from the tournament.
The GLT20 Canada eliminator between the Bangla Tigers Mississauga and the Toronto Nationals was abandoned to the wet outfield. With no result in site, Shakib Hasan-led were set to make the next round of the tournament as they held a higher position in the league standings in comparison to the Toronto Nationals.
But then, the match referee decided to conduct a super over between the Bangla Tigers Mississauga and the Toronto Nationals despite the outfield being wet to find a winner. After arguing for his team, Shakib Al Hasan didn’t arrive for the toss for the super over, which led to the GLT20 Canada confirming that the Nationals reached the Qualifier 2 at the expense of the Mississauga.
Addressing this decision, GT20 Canada released a statement that said, "The eliminator match of GT20 Canada Season 4 between the Mississauga Bangla Tigers and the Toronto Nationals was delayed due to rain. After repeated inspections, the umpires along with the match referee decided, going by the tournament regulations, that a super over would be played between the two teams at 7:30 pm with the toss to be held at 7:10 pm. At the time for the toss, the Toronto Nationals captain was present, but the Bangla Tigers team refused to appear."
"The match referee explained the plausible consequences of the said action to the captain and thereafter the umpire subsequently called off the match. Based on the report of the match referee, the Tournament Technical Committee unanimously decided to award the match to the Toronto Nationals who advanced to play the Brampton Wolves in the second qualifier."
